Children's book page spreads.

Third and final project for this module of my Illustration course was to design a single and double page spread. Given two choices of children's book by Oliver Jeffers, I chose his book The way back home. Our lecturers decided on two pages for us to illustrate in our own way, of course not forgetting to research styles and looking at how children move which I looked at through old photographs of my brother.

So here you go, the single page. (Which I am not very pleased with but I am very happy with the character.)

And finally the double page, featuring special appearances of my guinea pigs turned in to aliens!

The Outsiders book cover.

A book cover I designed for my Illustration course in University.
Book: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Made by scanning outlines drawn with references of features related to the appearance greasers and edited in Photoshop.
Many, many, many tests were done on this and it was so frustrating at times but here you go a book cover for The Outsiders.

I didn't submit it to the actual competition, too many other projects to focus on but it was a nice thing to try.

Remembering WW1

One of my projects for University.
To commemorate the 100th year since WW1. I was to create two posters, one image based and one typography based. To do this I looked at poems of various styles given. These poems were also created by participants in WWI, I chose the poem by Wilfred Owen Dulce et decorum est.

I chose the line (s)

"To children ardent for some desperate glory..."
For the image based poster, I focused on making the boy figure faceless and young casting the shadows of soldiers appearing much older than the figure itself. This represents the many young men that were enrolled in WW1, many were actually under aged boys that had lied on the application forms. The fact that it is faceless is meant to make the viewer wonder who these young people were.

And for the type based poster,

"Gas! Gas! Quick! Boys!..."

The image depicts what you might think, the horrible gas used in WW1 that would cause many casualties and deaths. I did many tests with this, but found this was the best version as it was much easier to read and get the main message.

I hope this work honors those who fought bravely for us.

Editorial project

Editorial project - based on an article given.

Main theme: Albert Einstein.
Article: The article talks about how geniuses such as Einstein, daVinci and Thomas Edison din't become geniuses by watching how to videos on youtube or reading self help books on how the could further expand their career. They looked at objects in alternative ways. It also gives examples of other situations in which everyday problems were solved with everyday objects, simply because that person looked at things alternatively.

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination."
"The person who reads to much and uses his brain too little will fall into lazy habits of thinking."
Both quotes from Albert Einstein.

I  enjoyed this project and just want to show two images from it first is a drawing of Einstein in pen, I am very proud of this. The texture worked out really well.

The next image is the actual final piece for my project, this was done in Photoshop using different effect brushes. First time doing an editorial piece so not entirely sure what to think of it but I like how it turned out.
